The Church has strong associations with Irish immigrants who first disembarked at Shellharbour with Caroline Chisholm in 1843.
The local parish community raised funds for the Church. Extensions were made in 1906. Named ‘Our Lady Star of the Sea’ 1861-1953, and ‘Stella Maris Parish Church’ in 1953, it is the oldest surviving church in the City of Shellharbour.
