Provenance and SignifcanceThis flag was used on the tourist launch 'The Lady Albion' owned by Albert Edwin Orange.

Albert had great plans for tourism in the area in the early 20th century and built a guest house 'Illawarra House', at the Esplanade, Oak Flats.

Visitors to the area would arrive at Albion Park Rail Station by steam train and make their way to the jetty at Koona Bay (end of Windang Street). From here they were picked up by Albert in the 'Lady Albion' and ferried across the lake to his guesthouse at Oak Flats.

Some visitors would come to the area for day excursions around the lake and trips to Gooseberry Island and Lake Entrance.

The 'Lady Albion' was built at Middle Harbour Sydney in 1926. She was licensed to carry up to 70 passengers on 7 November 1927. Certificate of Registration - 79994. Firm name - The Illawarra Ferry Company.

The Manager of the 'Lady Albion' was William Green of Albion Park and the two Captains were Billy Green and Mr. Jacobson. The first trip was Christmas Day 1927.

The Red Merchant Flag was donated to the museum by the Orange Family together with registration of the Lady Albion and panoramic photographs of Lake Illawarra c1938 that hung in Illawarra Guesthouse.

Due to the Depression in the 1930s, Albert's tourist venture failed and Illawarra Guesthouse was sold to the Chambers family in 1936 who dismantled it and rebuilt it as 'The California' at Reddall Parade.DonorOrange, Gordon Edwin
