NameShellharbour Scout HallTypeBuildingGeolocation[1] AddressAddison Street, Shellharbour VillageDescriptionScouting started in Shellharbour in 1924. Early meetings were first held in the Shellharbour Surf Club Hall, then moved to a store/ shed on the foreshore of Shellharbour Village, followed by the Shellharbour School of Arts Hall in Mary Street.
The present Scout Hall was built by well known eccentric local builder Edwin Klein, from materials taken from the boatstore at the harbour (located in Little Park) on its demolition. The boatstore was dismantled and taken to its present position on what was then the main route through Shellharbour Village. Klein was self taught and his Shellharbour ventures enabled him to purchase the former NSW State Governors 840 square 'Hillview' estate at Sutton Forest. After he died 'Hillview' was bequeathed to the State of NSW. The original boat store was rebuilt on its current site with the assistance of Des Cox, Norm Rae, Tom Strong and Arthur McLeay with help from many families involved in scouts.
The side wings of the Scout Hall were once part of the old Peterborough Store, which stood on the north-west corner of Addison and Mary Street. The wings were added in the 1960s when the old store was demolished.
The present kitchen was added to the building in 1980s (the kitchen cupboard, stove and fridge were taken from Sid McDonalds own kitchen), the hall floor was replaced 1990 and a shipping container added in 1995.
The district has undergone a number of name changes. Starting as South Illawarra, then Warrigal District, then Lake Illawarra District and from 1994 officially in Southern Illawarra (all groups between Windang and Gerringong) and since 2004 known as Illawarra South District.
