John was born 7 December 1826 at Ballyshanck, near Farrahy, County Cork, Ireland.
John and Ellen arrived in Sydney in 1855, and came to Shellharbour in December the same year. They leased 222 acres on the Towns Estate at Long Point (Bass Point) and for a time, lived at Barrack Head (Point), where their youngest son Richard was born.
John's wife and three of their children are buried at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Cemetery at Albion Park. Ellen died in 1897, a son Thomas in 1889, daughter Mary in 1903, and son Michael in 1904.
John Snr and three other sons, Patrick, John and Richard, went to Mullumbimby about 1910 where John Snr. died 3 April 1916.
Two other sons, Denis and James possibly stayed at Shellharbour on the farm.
