NameCowrie Island and Fish Processing AreaGeolocation[1] AddressShellharbour VillageDescriptionAt the eastern end of Towns Street, the Fish Processing Area is a simple concrete platform with concrete tables, sheltered within the breakwater and rocky foreshores of Shellharbour.
Its construction date is not known, however oral histories have a fish processing area in this location used by fisherman since at least the 1960's, and less formally since the early decades of the 20th century. The actual infrastructure has been upgraded several times, but the use has been continuous.
Cowrie Island is a rocky basalt rock outcrop, and surrounding it is the intertidal zone. Flora and fauna are found in these zones. The tiered island forms the north east boundary of the harbour, to which are its protective sea walls.
