“Ours is a priceless heritage and I hope and trust that everyone of us will work and preserve it for future generations, and will pass on intact to our children unspoiled’.
Mr. Doug Blow, of Tongarra Road Albion Park lived opposite the Showground and took over as caretaker of the Centenary Hall in 1964.He remembers the main focus of the hall was to celebrate the 100 yrs of Local Government, the council chambers were in Albion Park.
A procession led by Patrick (Paddy) O’Gorman and Darcy Dunster on horseback with a throwback to earlier days was held. Picture shows were held in the hall prior to television, and the hall has been the venue for debutante and cabaret balls and dances, wedding receptions, Church sessions and Red Cross functions as well as displays at the Annual Shows. The hall had a lovely Tallowood dance floor, a good stage ,two change rooms, a library room at the front with upstairs storage space. For a time technical classes were conducted there for sewing, floral art.Meals on Wheels were organised from that kitchen for some years. The sound effects in the main hall were the best of any on the south coast, the travelling education group serving the local primary schools, said it was the best in the state for for daytime screening of slides and tapes. Shellharbour Council provided me with a caretakers uniform and a list of duties.
The publication ‘Green Meadows Centenary History of Shellharbour Municipality New South Wales’ by William A. Bayley F.R.A.H.S. was produced to coincide with the 100 Years of the Shellharbour Municipality
