Brian served at Council for almost 37 years, and serviced in the position of town clerk (title later changed to general manager) for more 25 years.

Brian is a sports tragic and competed at the highest level in rugby, playing and touring as an Australian Wallaby. As the representative of the Mayor of Shellharbour City Council, Brian is on the board of directors of the Illawarra Academy of Sport and is a life member of the organisation. He has served in several executive positions with the IAS including vice president and chairman. Brian was awarded the Public Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2009.

Under Brian’s tenure major infrastructure projects in Shellharbour were completed, including the East-West Link which provides a transport corridor for those living in the western suburbs, and the construction of the Council owned and managed Shellharbour City Stadium which caters to a variety of sports and community events.

In 1988, Shellharbour City Council’s Aboriginal Advisory Committee (AAC) was created. The AAC celebrated its 22nd anniversary in 2020 and is the oldest continuous serving committee of its kind in NSW.

The Shellharbour City Hall of Fame was initiated in 1988 as a bicentennial project with the aim of recognising outstanding achievements in diverse fields by residents of Shellharbour City.

In December 1985, in recognition of the growth of Shellharbour, the municipality achieved city status, and was proclaimed Shellharbour City Council.

In 2009, Shellharbour celebrated its sesquicentenary, 150 years since the proclamation of the Municipality of Shellharbour 4 June 1859. An official civic ceremony was held at Croom Stadium to celebrate the occasion, an exhibition of the history of Shellharbour over 150 years was launched at Centenary Hall, and a commemorative medallion was struck.

Brian Weir was Shellharbour Municipal/City Council’s longest serving town clerk/general manager, dedicating more than 25 years to the role.
